General Indexes

Academic Search Complete (Ebsco) is a multidisciplinary index giving access to articles in over 8000 journals with many available in full text.

Expanded Academic ASAP (Gale Cengage Learning) is a general database with indexing for journal, magazine and newspaper articles, with many of the articles available full text.

Wilson Select Plus (FirstSearch) is a general database that contains full text articles from popular and scholarly journals and magazines.

 

Subject Indexes

Hollywood Creative Directory contains up-to-date information listing the names, addresses and current titles of entertainment professionals. To access this database you must provide the username: request@sfasu.edu and password: LIBRARY.

Inter-Play (Courtesy of Portland State University)Inter-Play is an index to plays in collections, anthologies, and periodicals. It presently contains more than 33,000 citations to plays by over 4000 playwrights. The plays in the database cover those from many different countries written in a wide variety of languages. It is updated continually. Please note that the play collections listed and call numbers are from books in the Portland State University collection. Check the Steen Library catalog to see if we have the collection listed and note our call number.

LitFinder is an online resource which is international in scope, covers all time periods, and contains a wealth of primary literature, including full-text poems and excerpts, as well as short stories, essays, speeches, and plays.

Arts and Humanities Search (First Search) covers articles in literature, language, art and the performing arts.

MLA Bibliography (Ebsco) provides over one million citations for items from journals and series published worldwide on literature and language topics.

Bissonnette on Costume: A Virtual Dictionary of Costume
Anne Bissonnette, Curator of the Kent State Museum, has developed a searchable index of costumes with digital photographs of actual clothing from the 18th-20th century. Front, back, profile, and detailed views are provided. Clothing can be searched by geography, time, and subject. There are copyright restrictions on use of the images.

The Costume Page
Costume research material including collections of images from books and museums. Online bibliographies of print material on period costume of all times are included.

Costume Society of America
An important professional association. Announcements of awards, scholarships, and meetings.

Costuming-related links of all kinds. The History and Museums sections are especially strong on images.

The Costumer's Manifesto
This is an important site for costumers. There are many visual resources under "Ethnic Costume" and "Costume History." The "Costume History" section contains an online course, "The History of Fashion & Dress," a "Timeline of Costume History Images," and a "Costume History Links Page."

The Elizabethan Costuming Page
Lots of information on Elizabethan costume from many parts of Europe. There are detailed images and instructions for constructing Elizabethan garments. A very useful and fun Elizabethan smock "pattern generator" helps to provide a good fit.

TIDES Costume Resources
A product of the Steen Library’s Digital Projects Department, TIDES (Teaching Images Digital Experiences) is a growing primary source of digital images for theatre costume and costume history.  Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Human Sciences’ Vintage Costume Collection, clothing in East Texas museums, and contemporary clothing and indigenous dress from Mexico are included.

TECHNICAL THEATRE

Computer Scenographics Studio
A "virtual studio" by a practicing scenographer and author of books on scenographic design. 3-D model making, lighting, and computer painting are covered in separate areas. The Computer Scenographics Gallery features renderings of past productions and is available to other scenographers and costume designers. The Research Library links to useful collections of images at museum sites. There are various links to demos and industry sites for the latest scenographic software.

Over 800 definitions of technical theatre terms arranged alphabetically.

The International Theatre Design Archive: Project 2000
A great collection of theatre scene, costume, and lighting designs sponsored by the USITT. Conveniently indexed by play title, playwright, designer, and producer. This site was named one of Choice magazine's Outstanding Academic Titles for 1999.

The Lighting Resource - Lighting Links
More than just company listings, there are links to articles on all aspects of lighting. Annotations for lighting company websites make it easy to use. Educational and entertainment resources are listed.

The Technical Theatre Career Survey
A yearly survey for technical theatre students, educators, and professionals. Past survey results can be viewed, and there is also a "Question of the Week" section.

United Scenic Artists
USA Local 829's union website for designers and artists in the entertainment industry. Useful internet theatre, film, and news magazine links, a showcase of theatre designer's work, a description of the designer's apprentice program, details of union benefits, a bulletin board, safety, and other information is provided.
