Children's Book Awards

Randolph Caldecott Medal Home Page
Named in honor of a nineteenth-century English illustrator, it is awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

Ezra Jack Keats Book Award
Established in 1985, this award recognizes and encourages authors and illustrators new to the field of children's books.

John Newbery Medal Home Page
Named for an eighteenth-century British bookseller, it is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution in American literature for children.

Coretta Scott King Award Home Page
Given to African American authors and illustrators for outstanding inspirational and educational contributions. The award is designed to commemorate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King.

The Pura Belpre Award
Established in 1996, this biennial award is presented for a books by a Latino/Latina writers and/or illustrators

Laura Ingalls Wilder Award
First given to its namesake in 1954, this award honors an author or illustrator whose books have made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.

Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal
An annual award established by the Association for Library Service to Children in 2001 for the author of the most distinguished informational book published in English during the preceding year.

Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature. First awarded in 2000.

Texas Bluebonnet Award Home Page
Established in 1979 to encourage Texas children to read. Students must read at least five books from the yearly list to be eligible to vote for their favorite title.

Texas Lone Star Reading List
A reading incentive program designed for young adults of Texas, grades 6-8, who are encouraged to read books from a selected reading list prepared by the TLSRL Committee.

2 x 2 Reading List
From the Children's Roundtable of Texas Library Association comes a list of recommended picture books and reading for young children from age 2 to grade 2.

Scott O'Dell Historical Fiction Award
Established in 1982 by Scott O'Dell to encourage writers to focus on historical fiction.

James Madison Book Award
Excellence in bringing knowledge and understanding of American history to children in elementary school and to middle-schoolers. First awarded in 2003.

Phoenix Award
Given to a book originally published in English twenty years previously which did not receive a major award at the time of its publication is intended to recognize books of high literary merit.

Jane Addams Children's Book Awards
This annual award honors books addressing topics promoting peace, social justice, world community, and/or equality.

Notable Social Studies Books for Young People
Books for these yearly lists are primarily for children in grades K-8. They are chosen for their emphasis on human relations, cultural diversity, and readability.

Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12
Annual list assembled by National Science Teachers Association in cooperation with the Children's Book Council

Boston Globe Horn Book Awards
Since 1967 this award has been given for excellence in literature for children and young adults in the categories of picture books, fiction, and poetry
