The Collection Development Programs works in conjunction with academic and research programs of access to ensure that necessary informational materials are available to support instruction, fulfill the research needs of the university community, and support the informational needs of library users. The library's collection development program is modeled on the Just-in Time (JIT) concept. JIT means producing the required information as it is needed by the patron.
The Bibliographic Services Librarian oversees the selection process and works collaboratively with faculty and the subject librarians to provide information resources in various formats that will support the university’s research and academic programs.
The R. W. Steen Library welcomes gifts which enhance and enrich the Library’s collections, and support the instructional and research programs of the University.
The Library usually does not accept outdated textbooks, popular paperbacks or magazines, books in poor condition, or U.S. government documents. Donations will be reviewed by subject librarians for addition to the collection. All items selected for the collection are cataloged and shelved with other materials in the appropriate subject field and made available to all patrons.
