How to Cite your Sources

It is required that writers cite their sources in a standardized way so that readers can track down those information sources. Think of citations as road maps to the sources that you used to create your research project or paper. The citations created are also the key to avoiding plagiarism!

Every citation style will require different uses of punctuation, capitalization, authors' names, etc. Consult a style manual which will show you how to format the sources used within your research project, as well as provide help with the writing process. Your professor will probably require that you use a specific style manual.

First, find out what style manual your professor wants you to follow. If you don’t know, ask. The most widely used style manuals on the SFA campus are either The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (MLA style) or The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA style). Some disciplines have their own style manuals. See the list below for the print copies of style manuals found in the Steen Library.

You can either follow the current edition of a printed style manual or use a free citation site. Help can also be found on many of the electronic databases that the Library subscribes to that supply citation help screens, and current versions of word processing software also offer citation help. Please note, while handy for ease of formatting citations, these citation sites are not perfect. Proofread carefully and check the citations generated against a printed manual or handbook. Here are two popular free citation creation sites:

Another internet source is the AARC OWL (Online Writing Lab) which gives information on how to use both the MLA and APA styles, including information on in-text citation formatting for both. Once at the OWL page, click on Writing Resources, and then click on Research.
