Brief Description of Shelby County
Shelby County is situated on the Sabine River bounded by Panola County on the north, Rusk and Nacogdoches counties on the west, and San Augustine and Sabine counties on the south. Shelby County was in the path of the early migrants into Texas, many of whom settled in the county temporarily and then proceeded westward.

1818: First permanent settlers in Shelby County
1824: Municipality of Tenehaw created with Nashville (now Shelbyville) as most important town
1837: Shelby County created by the Congress of the Republic
1837: Shelbyville became the county seat
