Brief Description of Cherokee County Cherokee County is
in the heart of East Texas. It is bounded on the west by the Neches River,
on the north by Smith County, and on the east by Rusk and Nacogdoches Counties.
1822: Cherokee Indians given permission to settle in the area by Governor
Jose Felix Trespalacios
1839: Cherokee Indians forced to flee to Arkansas after loosing battle to
remain
1844: Beginning of serious Anglo settlements
Cherokee County was created in 1846 from Nacogdoches County and organized
with Rusk as the county seat.
