History: Brief Descrition of Angenlina County

Angelina County is in the timber region of East Texas. It lies between the Angelina and Neches rivers, which form two of the boundaries for the county. The county was a part of the municipality of Nacogdoches under Mexican regime and was included in Haden Edwards' colonial grant, but he did not locate any families in this section.

Native Indian tribes: Hasinai, Caddo, Bidai
Tribes relocated to Angelina County: Shawnee, Cherokee, Biloxi
First Anglo settlers: 1834-35

Angelina County wasn't created from Nacogdoches County until 1846, shortly after Texas became a state. The county seat has moved several times starting in Marion then moving to Jonesville in 1854, then to Homer in 1858, and finally settling in Lufkin in 1892.
