NACOGDOCHES HISTORY

H[arold] D. Ard - (by Bobby H. Johnson), December 13, 1985 -- This history discusses playing football for SFA while attending Northwestern State in Natchitoches. Ard talks about working for Pure Oil Company at Van, Texas and his marriage to Mary Alice Birdwell at Tyler, Texas. He speaks of attending SFA and his experiences as Principal at Spring Hill and Lilbert. Ard also recounts county politics, and campaigning for County Clerk and County School Superintendent, including black voters and schools. Also included are his experiences as a Gunner Officer in the Navy during WWII and racial relations in the 1930's and 1940's. [OH-71]

Florine Rusche Burrows - (by Bobby H. Johnson), September 17, 1983 -- Ms. Burrows discusses background and owners of bus lines, her uncle Monzingo , and her work experiences. She briefly talks of memories of early equipment and salaries. [OH-58]

McNeil Grimes, Sr. - (by Bobby H. Johnson), September 27, 1984 -- Grimes describes early schools of Nacogdoches County, life in the country, and the city of Nacogdoches before 1920. He mentions memories of World War I and World War II. Grimes also discusses cotton, dairy, and beef cattle farming and cotton gin work, expresses attitudes toward politicians and describes the depression years. [OH-69]

Gertrude Harris - (by Bobby H. Johnson), June 27, 1983 -- This history describes life in Nacogdoches before and during World War II from the perspective of a merchant's wife. Mrs. Harris discusses the effect of being of the Jewish faith on her life. [OH-9]

Louis Harris - (by Bobby H. Johnson), June 24, 1983 --These are reminiscences of Harris' early life in Austria-Hungary, his experiences in the U.S. during the oil booms, the depression and life in Nacogdoches as a merchant during the 1930's and the 1940's. [OH-4]

Gordon Mettauer - (by Bobby H. Johnson), August 15, 1984 -- Mettauer discusses Oil Springs history, production during the 1920's and the 1930's, and present day production. [OH-54]

Ruth Fouts Pochmann - (by Bobby H. Johnson), July 14, 1983--Pochmann recounts life in Nacogdoches from about 1910 through the establishment and early years of SFA. She discusses businesses, social occasions, cultural life, and schools and teachers. [OH-5]

J. R. Quattlebaum - (by Bobby H. Johnson), September 17, 1983 -- Quattlebaum recalls his experiences with transportation insurance companies and early bus lines in East Texas, especially Airline Bus Line in Nacogdoches. He discusses work with the Office of Defense Transportation and rationing in World War II. He also mentions WACs stationed at SFA for training, safety training and commercial drivers, and Houston traffic problems. [OH-63]

Luther Swift, Jr. - (by Bobby H. Johnson), July 20, 1983 -- Swift speaks of his experiences growing up in Nacogdoches in the first part of the century (1910-1920). He discusses Dr. Birdwell and his family, work for the Corps of Engineers during World War II, work for the Texas Highway Department, the widening of North Street (1950's) and the building of a loop around town. E. A. Trojanowski - (by Bobby H. Johnson), September 17, 1983 -- Trojanowski talks about his experiences as a mechanic for the Airline Bus Line and later as a mechanic and truck driver for Exxon. He also discusses war shortages and his membership in the American Federation of Labor. [OH-59]

Hazel Shelton Abernethy - (by Bobby H. Johnson), October 11, 1985 -- The experiences of a teen-age girl in Nacogdoches during the 1930's and the 1940's war years as a student at the SFA Demonstration School and SFA. Ms. Abernethy discusses faculty members, Presidents Birdwell and Boynton, and life on the home front. She describes wartime activities including entertainment, transportation, rationing and shortages as seen by high school and college students. [OH-80]

John Elmer Childers, Jr. - (by Bobby H. Johnson), February 7, 1986 -- This history tells of the life experiences of a man growing up in East Texas during the depression of the 1930's. Childers tells of his jobs during the difficult times of the depression and World War II and, finally, a satisfying career in food services at SFA. [OH-84]

Thelma Jagoe Harling - (by Bobby H. Johnson), March 6, 1985 -- These are the reminiscences of a physical education teacher who came to SFA in fall of 1924. Harling recalls other early day faculty members, life in Nacogdoches and at SFA in the 1920's and 1930's, including feelings toward SFA. [OH-78]

Charles Lee Hill - (by Bobby H. Johnson), May 30, 1984 -- Hill shares his experiences as a student in the band during college years and after college. He discusses his career at SFA, working experience and life during the war at Camp Fannin. [OH-67]

Gracie M. Hornbuckle - (by Bobby H. Johnson), August 18, 1983 -- Ms. Hornbuckle recalls student life from 1923 to 1925: living arrangements, Dean of Women Mays, professors, sports and work as a library student assistant. She describes her early life and teaching career. [OH-2]

Robert T. McKibben - (by Bobby H. Johnson), November 8, 1985--McKibben tells about his experiences as SFA Dean of Education at SFA during the 1950's and 1960's. He describes growth of the school, contributions of the presidents, public education in Texas, and Nacogdoches in the 1950's. [OH-73]

Robert S. Maxwell - (by Bobby H. Johnson), November 7, 1983 -- Maxwell recounts his experiences as a professor of history at SFA and as an instructor and combat officer during World War II. He discusses SFA and Nacogdoches as they appeared to him during the 1950's and 1960's, the Presidencies of Boynton and Steen, fellow faculty members, and how the various social issues of the day affected the college and the town. He also tells of his military experiences in basic training, Officers Candidate School and combat in Europe. [OH-66]

James L. Nichols - (by Bobby H. Johnson), December 10, 1985 -- Nichols describes his experiences during WWII including enlistment , basic training, and Officers Candidate School. He also relates his experiences in England as a supply officer, the Normandy Invasion and stories of the front lines; his return to the U.S. and Texas, and feelings about having served in the War. Nichols discusses the post war years as a graduate student at University of Texas, and professor of history at SFA. He recalls SFA during the 1950's-60's including colleagues, the student body, Drs. Boynton, Birdwell, and Steen, the growth of the history faculty and reminiscences about his teaching career. [OH-85]

Berdine Adams - (by Bobby H. Johnson), February 10, 1984 -- This history relates very detailed and introspective experiences of a POW in the Philippines and in Japan during World War II. Adams discusses the treatment of prisoners as well as character of the Japanese soldiers and civilians. [OH-61]

Jerry R. Alexander - (by Bobby H. Johnson), March 30, 1985 -- Alexander speaks of his experiences as an East Texan in World War II. He tells of his participation in the D-day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. [OH-82]

James Boswell - (by Bobby H. Johnson), June 2, 1984 --This history deals primarily with the experiences of Boswell during the Normandy invasion and subsequent hedgerow fighting. There are vivid discussions of the landing, sinking of a troop transport, heavy fighting in the ensuing weeks, German prisoners and reaction to all these events by the French civilians. [OH-62]

Oran Burrows - (by Bobby H. Johnson), July 9, 1983 -- Burrows relates experiences in his flight training, post-war years, and service in the Reserves. [OH-64]
