Nathan D. Canterbury Papers

TABLE OF CONTENTS

HISTORY

Nathan D. Canterbury began his forestry career with the U. S. Forest Service in Montana in 1921 after receiving his Master of Forestry degree from Yale University. He later worked for the Massachusetts Forest and Park Association, was State Forester of Louisiana, Director of the Yale University Forest and served as Assistant State Forester of South Carolina. After moving to Texas, Canterbury worked for Champion Papers, Inc., as Division Forester and in 1946 established his own business in Houston as a consulting forester.

Among the professional honors Canterbury received were those of having been named a Fellow in the Society of American Foresters and having been presented the 1966 Texas Distinguished Service Award to Forestry. He helped organize the Gulf States Section of the Society of American Foresters and served as both secretary and chairman of the Section. Canterbury was a past president as well as a former vice president and member of the Board of Directors for the Texas Forestry Association.

These papers, which relate to Canterbury's business and professional life, are divided into broad general categories. Within the broad categories the papers are subdivided and arranged by types, such as correspondence, reports, pamphlets and speeches. The Collection contains approximately 1474 items.
