John Calhoun Barnett, the son of William Barnett (1785-1827), was born 15 March 1812 in Tennessee. He married Mary English Morrow in 1832. About 1842 they came to Nacogdoches with their family. Barnett, one of the first ordained Presbyterian ministers in Texas, served variously as a circuit riding missionary, a school teacher and a book salesman. Barnett died 4 April 1859 and was buried in Upper Chireno Cemetery in Nacogdoches County. His wife is thought to be buried in the same cemetery.
