George Aldrich was the first County Surveyor of Houston County, serving in that capacity from 1839 to 1843. George Aldrich was the brother of Collin Aldrich, first Chief Justice of Houston County, who fought at San Jacinto and who was born May 2, 1801 in Mendon, Mass. The brothers came to Red River County, Texas in 1828. No birth date, death date, or place of birth has been verified yet for George. For a short time, around 1834, George Aldrich lived in Nacogdoches and was associated with Robert Anderson Irion as a trader and surveyor.

The correspondence in these papers, directed to Aldrich, mostly deals with surveys and sale of land. Among the more interesting letters in this collection are: Charles A. Sewell's denying that he ever sold arms to the Caddo Indians (1839); Charles Taylor's relating the marriage of Anna Raguet to Robert Irion, whom she chose over Sam Houston (1840); and that of David G. Burnet, Secretary of State (once President) of the Republic of Texas, calling for a survey of land for the establishment of a general system of education (1839). The originals of the xeroxed items from the Nacogdoches County Courthouse records are housed in the East Texas Research Center. The originals for the three typescripts copied from the R. B. Blake Collection have not yet been located. (1980) [53 items]
