Dr. Robert Anderson Irion (1804-1861), arrived in Texas in 1832 and soon settled in Nacogdoches. A prominent citizen, he practiced medicine, was elected to the Committee of Safety and Vigilance for Nacogdoches and was commandant of Nacogdoches Municipality. He also served as a senator to the First Congress of the Republic of Texas and as secretary of state. As a friend of Sam Houston's, he carried personal messages between Houston and Anna Raguet (1819-1883). Eventually, in 1840, he and Miss Raguet were married.
This small collection consists of photocopies and typed transcriptions of five letters exchanged by Robert and Anna during what was obviously an upsetting time in their marriage.
The location of the originals of the letters are available at The University of Texas at Arlington Library in the Irion Family Papers 1825-1929.
