The Texas State Historical Survey Committee was established in 1953 by the state legislature to coordinate and sponsor projects and to survey, record, and preserve Texas history through state and local groups and individuals. Among its activities, the Committee approved the erection of official state historical markers. In 1973, the Committee was renamed and is now known as the Texas Historical Commission.
Sometime before 1962 the Nacogdoches County Historical Survey Committee was created. During the Texas Civil War Centennial observation (1961-1965), the Nacogdoches Committee undertook the project of locating and marking grave sites for men who either served in the Civil War from this county or for men who served elsewhere but who were buried in this county.
The collection includes newspaper clippings about the project; historical articles about the veterans; veteran's service records from the Texas State Archives and National Archives; cemetery records and other notes about veterans; correspondence of or about the veterans; and muster rolls and officer lists for Nacogdoches, Angelina, San Augustine, Rusk, and Galveston Counties.
